Knowing the God who Knows You
How we view God determines what kind of relationship you will have with Him:
If we have a view of God who is always ready to punish us every time we do something wrong instead of correcting us in love and mercy our relationship with Him will be hinder by guilt and condemnation.
Psalms 139 is a beautiful psalm of David that gives us an insight of his relationship with God, one of total transparency. Because of the personal pronouns David uses over and over again it is believe that this psalm is actually a private devotional between David and God.
The repeated personal pronouns are: You have, You know, You see.
Now imagine somebody who knows everything about you:
For many that would be uncomfortable, even a little bit scary. The fear of being exposed to others, or having others knowing everything about you.
The God you and I serve does knows everything about you and me– what we are thinking, what we are going to say before you say it:
Listen to what the psalmist David says about the God who knows everything about him.
Psalms 139:1-3
O Lord, you have examined my heart
and know everything about me.
2 You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
3 You see me when I travel
and when I rest at home.
You know everything I do.
4 You know what I am going to say
even before I say it, Lord.
Notice what David says here in Psalms 139:
Verse 1-You know everything about me:
Verse 2- You know my thoughts:
Verse 3-You know everything I do:
Verse 4-You know everything I am going to say
One of the attributes of God: He knows everything: God is all-knowing—He is Omniscience, meaning– God is unlimited in what He knows.
The prophet Isaiah asked this question-who taught God:
With whom did He consult and who gave Him understanding?
And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge,
And informed Him of the way of understanding? Isaiah 40:14 NASB
The answer to that question: is no one! God knows everything:
There is a false teaching circulating today called “open theism,” or the limited knowledge of God, which states that God doesn’t know everything.
That God is actually learning -that God created a universe in which the future is not entirely known, not even to God.
This is the opposite of what the word of God teaches: That God is everlasting. He has always existed and always will exist. He has no beginning and he has no end. He is eternal.
God knows the past, present and future-but He is so personal that He knows you and me, think about that for a moment, God personally knows each person who has ever lived, or is living right now and even those who are yet to be born.
God is so personal; He knows our struggles, our fears, disappointments-our victories and defeats
He knows what concerns you—what worries you—what’s amazing, He knows all about our failures and weakness—and yet He still loves you and me:
King David is simply getting lost in this Psalm as he thinks how good God is:
David wasn’t a perfect man—he had many failures in his life—adultery-guilty of causing an innocent man (Uriah) to be killed. David wasn’t the greatest father either: Yet he is called- “a man after God’s own heart”.
You seeGod loves us in spite of ourselves:
David continues in Verse 5- You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.
Sounds like a Paradox—You go before me and follow me!—not only is God all-knowing—He is Omnipresence, meaning He is always present.
The Living Bible translate this verse- I look behind me and you’re there, then up ahead and you’re there, too—your reassuring presence, coming and going.
David acknowledges the ever presences of God.
Verse 7– I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!
8 If I go up to heaven, you are there;
if I go down to the grave, you are there.
You can understand why David says in Verse-6 -Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! NLT
David is saying; I just can’t wrap my mind around this:
It’s too much for me to understand— Such knowledge is too wonderful for me!
Message Bible says- I can’t take it all in!
The God we serve who knows all about us, with all our faults and failures, yet loves and accept us:
What a comforting thought—
God surrounds our lives: He is before us, behind us, above us, below us, beside us!
Good news is—He is for us:
This flies in the face of the false teaching called: Deism—opposite of atheism
Deism acknowledges there is a God but He has nothing personally to do with mankind:
Like the great watch maker—God created the world——-left it to run on its own: No interaction- a non-personal God:
There is a God who knows you, loves you, He is for you, not against you-to help you, comfort you, guide you, and bless your life:
Look again at the second half of verse 5: “You place your hand of blessing on my head.”
We are always afraid God is going to smack us on the top of our heads:
David is saying, God hand is on us for good: to bless us—God wants to do more for us than what we can ever image:
Unfortunately many of God’s children are filled with guilt and condemnation—feeling unworthy:
1 John 3:20- For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.
Depending on your relationship with God, a Christian who always feels unworthy can asked forgiveness and yet still feel condemned.
John says, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.
The Holy Spirit will convict us but He will never condemn us:
Because God loves us He will reveal those things that need to be placed under the blood of Jesus through repentance.
Listen to what Hebrews 12:5-6 says- “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.
God disciplines the one He loves.
David in the past experienced the discipline of the Lord—the Lord forgive him, but he still suffered the consequences of his actions:
David knew firsthand how sin can rob a person of God’s blessings:
David ends his devotion with these words:
Verse 23 & 24– Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
David personalizes it, “searched me.”
The phrase: “searched me.” Is a very strong word in the Hebrew, the word search means to see through, to pierce.—– the idea here, God please search me inside and out.
Point out anything in me that offends you:
Author/Speaker France Chan said: “The very fact that a holy, eternal, all-knowing, all-powerful, merciful and just God loves you and me is nothing short of astonishing.”
Whatever you are going through right now—remember you’re not alone—God is with you. He knows you personally
I want to encourage you to get to know the God who knows you!
Sit at His feet, opened up the Word of God, allowed the Holy Spirit to help you develop personal one-on-one relationship with Jesus.
